ABOUT KATE

I developed a love of working with flowers from a young age under the guidance of a very talented mother and grandmother.

Like them I have become a keen gardener and learnt to respect and relish each season as it comes. I find as much joy in the delicate structure of wintery seed heads as in the vivid colours and abundance of flowers on a summer’s day.

My love of the English countryside, gardens, travel and art all influence my work.

my style and inspiration

I am known for my natural, romantic and abundant style. My garden and working with flowers have always gone hand in hand and I love nothing more than using natural ingredients. Nature with its own form, texture and movement through the changing seasons is what inspires me most and informs so many of my designs.

Whether you want ‘wild and exuberant’ or ‘simple and elegant’ I try to use flowers in their natural state. I get great pleasure in using the perfect and the imperfect - twisting boughs of honeysuckle, branches of blossom, wands of wild roses, trails of clematis, statuesque seed heads, arches of roseships etc - all of which give the sense of ‘bringing the outside in’. I also use plants and trees in my designs.

I have a wonderful, hard-working and fun-loving team, all of whom share my values and what’s important to me.

well farm

I have a cutting garden here at Well Farm where I grow a huge range of annuals, perennials and unusual flowers which I use to give my designs a true feeling of the English garden. I seek out scented flowers to grow and I have a large selection of roses for cutting and mature shrubs and trees. I am also lucky enough to have access to hedgerows and woodlands where I can forage for foliage, hips, berries, seed heads and bring a sense of the wild and the countryside to my work.

ENVIRONMENT

So much of my work is guided and inspired by nature and so I believe strongly in doing all I can to preserve it and work as sustainably as possible.

  • I try always to use seasonal flowers.

  • The flowers I grow and use in my cutting garden are organically grown. I use peat free compost and avoid all chemical insecticides or pesticides

  • When I buy flowers I try to source British flowers when possible and have a great relationship with a number of local growers.

  • I use no floral foam AT ALL. I have designed props of all shapes and sizes to keep flowers in water at events so that they remain as fresh as possible.

  • All my packaging has been sourced with its eco credentials in mind. Any cellophane I use can be composted.
